An Introduction To Dutch New Wave Vol. 29


It has been over four months since the last compilation on the Dutch New Wave front. But behind the scenes I bought some new vinyl and searched the internet for possible new additions to this compilation.

To start the background information on this Volume, I was very pleased to discover the compilation album "Groeten uit Amsterdam". It featured the never elsewhere released track Better Than The Movies of The Dutch, of which I am a huge fan since their first official release Working At Los Alamos. The band was featured a lot on Dutch radio during the release of Wastelands, and I even used to have several FM recordings of the band on tape, which went lost when moving houses. Brown Jenkin is from the same compilation.

Several of the live songs are from tapes released by Milkyway Cassettes, which was a cassettelabel featuring recordings from bands who played the Melkweg in Amsterdam. Besides Buster Smiles, featured here with Modern Times, and Rebel, featured here with Run. Although both bands are on one of those cassettes, the tracks come from the Grote Prijs van Nederland compilations of 1983 and 1984. On/Off , Two Supply, Just Like Eddie and X-Ray are from vinyl singles, while Tool & Die, Turf and Spectral Display are from lp releases. Swedisch Kok I got through a befriended engineer, Richenel comes from the compilation "De geschiedenis van de Nederlandse pop muziek 5" 1985 - 1994 and D'Men and The Two I found on the internet. Last but not least the front cover. The  past week was spend in Otterloo, a village in de Veluwe, where I enjoyed a holiday with the family. During the week we visted the Kröller Müller Museum at the Hoge Veluwe Park, where I made a picture of the flowers in the patio of the museum. This patio can be found in the Van Gogh gallery.

And that brings us to Volume 32 of An Introduction To Dutch New Wave. This time 65% of the numbers came from recent purchased vinyl. I will keep telling that Discogs has become a major resource for discovering and hunting vinyl from bands and artists, that sometimes released one single only. But since a couple of weeks I am using a great cross reference site called Nederlandse vinylsingles . The guys behind this site are doing a great job, tracking down all Dutch vinyl singles. Some information on several songs. The Kimono track is spelled wrong. I kept it this way, since the cover of the single shows the same title. It’s one of the groups of which I used the single b-side instead of the a-side. The others are Blackout (b-side of Obscure Disco), G.T. A Flock Of Seagulls

Being a fan for many many years I was really surprised the band decided finally, after 25 years, to do an European tour again. I am aware of the fact that it's only Mike Score nowadays who's left of the old line-up. Still I like to see them, because back in 1984 I was unable to visit the famous Noorderligt at Tilburg. On 09-09-09 A Flock Of Seagulls will play the well known Paradiso theatre in Amsterdam. I became an instant fan of the four when I heard I Ran on the radio. But it was Wishing (if I had a photograph of you) which really turned me into AFOS. Through the years I was able to track down most of their vynil releases. And of course the CD's followed as well. I even became a member of the Airborne Division. With the internet things changed and in 1996 I was able to get a CDR copy of most of the b-sides and rare recordings of AFOS ripped from vynil, which I like to share with you.
