The Farmer's Conclusion
Mylène Farmer is born as Mylène Jeanne Gautier on 12
September 1961 in Pierrefonds, Quebec. At the age of eight the family moved
back to France. Although she loves horseback riding and even qualifies as a
horse instructor, she is gripped by acting at the age of 17. She follows a
course at the Cours Florent, a drama school in Paris, where she changes her
name, as a homage to the thirties Hollywood actress Frances Farmer to Mylène
Farmer. She earns her first money with acting in TV commercials.
In 1984 she met the film student Laurent Boutonnat. He will
prove to be of great influence on her career, through the many, often
controversial, video clips he shoots for her music. In addition, he writes,
especially on her first albums, the music while Mylène Farmer herself, as well
as, takes care of all the lyrics. These texts are often controversial in which
they do not shy away from topics such as politics, sex, gender issues, faith
and AIDS. The single Libertine, with a video clip based on the film Barry
Lyndon and the books on Marquis de Sade, opens for Farmer and delivers her a
contract for two albums. In 1986 she debuted with the album Cendres de Lune.
In 1988 follows Ainsi Soit Je ..., which is the second most
successful album by the singer to this day and is named the best-selling album
of the eighties released by a French singer. It is preceded by the hit singles
Sans Contrefaçon and Ainsi Soit Je ... The texts, which contain literary
references to famous authors such as Baudelaire and Poe, are almost all written
by Mylène Farmer, except for L'Horloge, based on a poem by Charles Baudelaire.
adaptation of the Déshabillez-moi, originally written in 1966 by Juliette
Gréco, which is to become an audience favorite, and the instrumental The
Farmer's Conclusion. The album has a melancholy and sad tone and is about
death, suicide and insanity with sombre and desperate lyrics. In addition,
topics such as sexual ambiguity, sodomy and provocation are also addressed.
After the number one record of the third single Pourvu qu'elles soient douces
pushes the album to the number one position in the French album parade.
Although Farmer, despite her acting education, is genuinely
shy to stand in front of an audience, after a test concert in a small theater,
she overcomes her fears, after which in 1989 she gives a 52 concerts tour
through French-speaking Europe. This results in the live album En Concert that
shows both musically and visually that her stage presentation is a sensation
and certainly not inferior to the shows of her American counterpart Madonna.
